When to Call for Emergency Plumbing Help?

Oct 19, 2026 • By Fresh Start Plumbing

Plumbing emergencies don't always happen during normal business hours. That's why as a home or business owner it's important to know which local plumbers you can call for assistancce ahead of time. Even so, it's not always clear whether a situation warrants an emergency call or whether you can wait until Monday morning. In case you ever find yourself in one of these situations, definitely make that call.

Water Leak

Unfortunately, most buildings suffer from some degree of water leak. However, a new small leak is not as dire as as an extensive one causing immediate property damage. If you notice any stains or discoloration on the walls, ceilings, or flooring, call for emergency plumbing help immediately. These brown or yellow spots along with any sagging or bubbling spots in the foundation are signs of an ongoing leak that's probably been hidden until now.

Another sign you need to get a plumber out ASAP includes a rising water bill with no noticeable change in household usage. You might have also noticed a lingering musty odor in the bathroom, kitchen, or areas of the property where the water line runs through. A noticeable dripping or water rushing noise behind the walls when no water fixtures are in use could also indicate a leak.

Low Water Pressure

If one minute water was exiting the faucets with a normal amount of pressure and the next minute it's barely dribbling out, get a plumber immediately. Hopefully, you just have a bad clog that's blocked the line. Then the plumber will just have to empty and clean the line to prevent any costly damage. However, if a pipe has busted, you'll want it immediately repaired to avoid much more costly damage from occuring.

Failed Hot Water Heater

A failing hot water heater isn't always an emergency plumbing issue, but it can be. If corrosion has led to the failure, this could result in water leaking out of the tank and flooding the surrounding room. Additionally, in the middle of winter, not having any hot water can cause your pipes to freeze burst. If your circuit breaker keeps tripping every time you attempt to reset the appliance, it could point to a serious electrical issue that should be fixed immediately.

Repeated Toilet Overflow

Toilet clogs are going to happen, and it's not often you need an emergency plumber for this issue. However, if turning off the shutoff valve behind the appliance doesn't stop the water flow or if there is sewage or wastewater backing up into the room, start dialing.
